Burning Issues

Three years ago we compiled a list of burning issues which we would return to discuss whenever we wish. The issues remain the same. Others have joined the clamour on some of these issues but take a look at the list:

N.B. These are NOT in order of priority!

1.

Complaints Procedures .......... as they pertain to PWHIVA.  We need to ask the NHS to revisit its procedures.  Witnessed two complaints made and impossible conditions applied which render it difficult to impossible for people to complain without divulging confidential details about their status.

2.

Mental Health issues Concern at the lack of consideration of the emotional state of PWHIVA and the possible/likely/certain implications on their health.
3.
Dental Health issues The removal of services at a number of hospitals and the problems PWHIVA have had finding dentists.
4.
Consultation Arising from (1) Deficiencies in the consultation process that lead to the above and how to improve it and what steps should the NHS make to communicate its policies to patients.
5.
Test Results e.g. Why can written results not be delivered to patients if they so require?  (Some centres do)  What about internet access to results?  How about a London wide facility?
6.
Appointments with Consultants The rushed nature of these and what can be done to remove the pressure so that a proper consultation can take place.
7. Safer sex and sexual dysfunction Are condoms enough?  Is there a need for advice on such things as sex toys?  The lack of approachable resources to deal with these issues.
8. Safety First. Some clinics routinely test for syphilis others do not.  Self test Chlamydia packs are available to youngsters.  Why not to PWHIVAIDS?  Why, given the epidemic nature of this ailment and its ability to go unnoticed, is it not routinely tested for?
9. Boundaries acting as Barriers! Budgets, PCTs etc. The people who have a GP in an adjacent PCT area... There are a whole raft of issues that arise because of these arbritrary boundaries.
10. When I get older! Consideration of what happens when PWHIVAIDS become old since this, now, is a real prospect. Issues around Stigma and Discrimination and a sheer lack of expertise among those we may come to depend on.
11. Policing of Contracts How can a supplier continue to be contracted having failed to deliver on existing contracts? How can those commissioning services be persuaded to take into account the real performance of suppliers rather than some contrived list of spurious statistics?
12. Criminalisation of HIV This could be a very long essay indeed. Suffice it to say we have this in our sights!
13. Stigma Prejudice and Discrimination

We made a comprehensive representation to the Department of Health on these issues. Yet again these are issues we have in our sights!

14. Confidentiality

Another topic on which we made a comprehensive representation to the Department of Health . Yet again an issue we have in our sights!
